In 2001 my 87 year-old mother moved across the country to a retirement home in Portland, Oregon in order to be closer to me and my family.

Although she had used a cane for quite a few years, soon after moving here her doctor recommended a walker to prevent falls and assist her mobility. Though my mother was by no means ready for a wheelchair, she frequently sat on her walker seat as we pushed her around in stores, malls, on walks outside, or while we were downtown. This capability greatly enhanced the amount of time she could spend shopping or simply being with us. However, while the walker yielded many benefits, my mother quickly found that her legs tired easily after having to hold her feet up while being pushed around.

Of course, my mother being the creative person that she is (she spent her career designing clothes) decided to fix the problem. She designed a sling that attached to her walker, allowing her feet to rest while she was being pushed, thus spawning the original design for the Walker Sling Foot Rest (PP) by Golden Years Accessories™.

I didn’t think much of the idea at first, which goes to show that even a grown man can still learn from his mother. I began to see more and more elderly people expressing discomfort with their walkers and many asked how they could obtain one of my mother’s slings. I began to realize this might be a nice product to make available to other people with Walkers.

I decided to take my mother’s advice and, with a few design changes and a patent, started Golden Years Accessories so that everyone who used a walker could rest their feet while being pushed around.
